Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's complete return to training with the German national football team has been delayed once more, raising ongoing concerns about his fitness ahead of the World Cup.
The 40-year-old veteran, who was recently recalled to the squad, did not take part in Thursday’s closed-door training session in Chicago as he continues his recovery from a calf injury. According to the German Football Association (DFB), Neuer is still “working on regaining his fitness through an individual training programme”.
This situation leaves Germany with limited preparation time before Saturday’s final warm-up fixture against co-hosts the USA. The team’s last training session is set to take place on Friday at Soldier Field. Consequently, Oliver Baumann is expected to start in goal once again for the DFB, just as he did in last Sunday’s 4-0 win over Finland.
Head coach Julian Nagelsmann currently has no new injury or selection issues. On Thursday, he conducted training with 25 members of the World Cup squad, along with standby goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, at the facilities of MLS club Chicago Fire.
