New Delhi, 26 May. In compliance with its earlier announcement, the Central Government has constituted a high-level committee on demographic change. Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared this information in a post on social media platform X on Tuesday.
Amit Shah posted on ‘X’ and said that unnatural demographic change due to infiltration and other reasons is a big challenge for the present and future of any nation. To deal with this challenge, on August 15, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the formation of a ‘High Level Committee’ on Demographic Change. I am happy to inform that the government has constituted this committee.
Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navalekar (Retd) Chairman of the Committee
Shah said that in this committee headed by Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navalekar (retired), Census Commissioner along with Durga Shankar Mishra (retired IAS), Balaji Srivastava (retired IPS) and Dr. Shamika Ravi will be the members of the committee. Joint Secretary (Foreigners-I), Ministry of Home Affairs, will be the Member Secretary of this committee.
Amit Shah further said, ‘Demographic change is a serious problem to our sovereignty as well as national security, law and order, serious changes in social structure and protection of tribal society. This committee will comprehensively assess the demographic change taking place across India due to illegal migration and other abnormal reasons and analyze the patterns of abnormal population changes at the level of religious and social communities and present a planned and time-bound solution to it.
It is noteworthy that demographic change and infiltration were big issues in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had surrounded the then Mamata Banerjee government regarding this issue. On this basis, BJP defeated Trinamool Congress in the assembly elections and won power with absolute majority. In such a situation, it is now considered important for the Central Government to constitute a high level committee on demographic change.
