When to Replace Your FASTag: If you frequently encounter delays at toll plazas despite having an active FASTag, this information could be crucial for you. In such instances, the issue may not lie with the toll system itself, but rather with your FASTag. According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), a damaged or worn-out FASTag prevents proper scanning, leading to delays at toll plazas and the formation of long queues. Furthermore, this situation causes inconvenience to other commuters, who may have to face traffic congestion.
When Might an Active FASTag Stop Working?
According to the NHAI, a FASTag can deteriorate over time due to exposure to sunlight and heat. Constant daily exposure to sun and heat causes the FASTag to sustain damage, preventing it from establishing a proper connection with the scanners installed at toll plazas. This results in scanning delays or, in some cases, the scanner being unable to detect the FASTag at all.
What Causes FASTag Damage?
According to an official post by the NHAI on the platform X, a FASTag can get damaged due to three primary reasons:
1. If you frequently scrub your vehicle's windshield vigorously or use harsh chemical-based cleaners, the RFID chip embedded within the FASTag may get damaged.
2. Prolonged exposure to intense sunlight, dust, and rain can degrade both the adhesive layer and the internal chip of the FASTag.
3. Over time, a FASTag naturally ages, and its performance may diminish, particularly if you have been using it for several years.
When Should You Replace Your FASTag?
If you are experiencing issues at toll plazas due to your FASTag, you should consider replacing it. According to the NHAI, if a FASTag is more than five years old, or if you are repeatedly facing scanning difficulties and delays at toll plazas, it is advisable to replace it. Furthermore, a defective FASTag can cause disruptions and force you to make frequent stops at toll collection points.
