Smart Electricity Meter: A major change is on the horizon for millions of electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh. Starting June 2026, even those households in the state that are currently equipped with prepaid smart meters will begin receiving monthly electricity bills. This means that the system of frequently recharging meters is gradually coming to an end. The UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has been continuously informing consumers about this transition.

However, the most crucial point here is that for you to receive an electricity bill in June, it is essential that your smart meter has been successfully switched to "Postpaid" mode. Therefore, if you have not yet received any notification regarding this, it is advisable to check the status of your meter yourself from the comfort of your home. The good news is that there is no need to visit any office for this; you can simply determine the status by pressing a single button on the meter itself.

**How to Check Your Smart Meter Status in Minutes from Home**
If you have not yet received a notification regarding the switch to Postpaid mode, there is no need to panic. You can directly view the status on your smart meter's display screen. To do this, press the control button located on the meter repeatedly, one press at a time. Various types of information will cycle through on the screen. Amidst these details, the meter's current mode will also appear for a few seconds.

If "Postpaid" appears on the screen, it indicates that your meter has successfully transitioned to the new billing system. Conversely, if "Prepaid" is displayed, it means your meter is still operating in the old mode. In such a scenario, consumers can register a complaint via the 1912 helpline or through the UPPCL mobile app.

**What Changes After Switching to Postpaid Mode?**
Until now, users of prepaid smart meters were required to recharge their meters before consuming electricity. However, following the implementation of the postpaid system, electricity bills will be issued on a monthly basis—much like standard utility bills. This means that concerns regarding power disconnection due to an exhausted meter balance will be significantly alleviated. According to UPPCL, starting June 2026, electricity bills will be delivered via SMS, WhatsApp, and the UPPCL mobile app. Additionally, consumers will be able to access their billing details by entering their Customer ID on various digital payment applications.
