On Monday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta of Delhi participated in a journey as part of the newly launched "Metro Monday" initiative by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. This campaign aims to encourage citizens to utilize public transportation and conserve fuel. Accompanied by Minister Ravinder Inderraj Singh and other senior officials, the Chief Minister traveled from Kashmiri Gate Metro Station to ITO Metro Station.
This initiative was launched shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to reduce the use of fuel-powered vehicles in light of the global energy crisis linked to tensions in West Asia. Rekha Gupta urged residents to adopt public transport in their daily lives to save national resources and reduce pollution and traffic congestion in the capital. She emphasized that the government is working to enhance public transport facilities and ensure better connectivity for passengers. The Chief Minister also expressed gratitude to citizens who chose to travel by metro as part of this campaign.
Delhi Minister Ashish Sood remarked that Prime Minister Modi has called for energy conservation across the nation. He stated that making this initiative successful is a national responsibility, and the Delhi government has appealed to residents to use public transport today. He mentioned that he would also be working from home for two days. Meanwhile, the DMRC announced that, in response to the increasing number of passengers and to support the initiative, it will operate 24 additional metro services every Monday. To ensure smooth operations, extra security personnel, ticket counters, and baggage screening systems will also be deployed.
The Metro Monday initiative is part of a broader fuel-saving and austerity plan announced by the Delhi government, which includes mandatory work-from-home for government employees twice a week, reductions in fuel allocations for officials, changes in office hours, and an appeal to residents for a "Vehicle Prohibition Day."
