Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, has recently shifted his stance on family planning. He announced that families will receive financial incentives of ₹30,000 for the birth of a third child and ₹40,000 for a fourth child. This decision has drawn criticism from various political parties, who have linked it to an attempt by the central government to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats and questioned why a national family planning policy is not being implemented.

During an event in Narsannapeta, Srikakulam district, Naidu expressed that he has reconsidered his views on family planning. He acknowledged his previous efforts in promoting it but emphasized that children are now viewed as assets, necessitating action in their best interest. He stated, "We will provide ₹30,000 immediately after the birth of a third child and ₹40,000 for a fourth child."

Naidu has been vocal about the declining birth rates and warned against repeating the mistakes made by countries like South Korea and Japan. He noted that rising incomes have led some couples to opt for only one child, while others may choose to have a second child only if their firstborn is a girl. He stressed the importance of maintaining a total fertility rate (TFR) of 2.1, which is essential for population stability.

In response to Naidu's announcement, CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat condemned the move, stating, "We strongly oppose the population policy in Andhra Pradesh. Naidu, while you may have joined the NDA, have you crossed the line in compromising your intellect and mindset? By offering ₹30,000, you aim to deprive women of their fundamental rights over their pregnancies. This will lead to families pressuring women to have more children for financial gain."
