Consequently, many individuals reach for a cold drink whenever they suffer from gas or acidity. It is a common belief that consuming cold drinks induces belching, thereby expelling accumulated gas from the stomach. In fact, cold drinks are often compared to various other remedies known for providing relief from acidity. The question now arises: are cold drinks truly effective in alleviating gas and acidity? Dr. Anil Arora, Chairman of the Institute of Liver, Gastroenterology, and Pancreatico-Biliary Sciences at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, explained to News18 that cold drinks contain carbon dioxide gas, which is what triggers belching upon consumption. Many people feel a sense of lightness in their stomach after belching, leading them to believe that the gas has been eliminated. However, this relief is merely temporary and has no significant impact on the underlying issue. Cold drinks do not cure gas or acidity; on the contrary, in many instances, they can exacerbate the problem. The carbonation, high sugar content, and acidic components present in cold drinks can increase the level of acid within the stomach. This can lead to heightened acidity, a burning sensation in the stomach, and bloating.

The expert further noted that cold drinks contain elements such as phosphoric acid and carbonic acid. These substances can adversely affect the inner lining of the stomach and aggravate acid reflux issues. Consuming cold drinks—particularly on an empty stomach or in excessive quantities—can be detrimental to health. Furthermore, cold drinks can disrupt the digestive process in some individuals. 

While the carbonation in these beverages may indeed induce belching and provide momentary relief, it also carries the risk of generating even more gas within the stomach. This is precisely why many people experience bloating or a sensation of heaviness in their stomach after consuming cold drinks. According to doctors, paying close attention to one's diet and lifestyle is crucial for preventing gas and acidity. One should minimize the consumption of deep-fried and spicy foods, eat slowly while chewing thoroughly, drink adequate amounts of water, avoid lying down immediately after meals, adopt home remedies such as buttermilk, fennel seeds, ginger, and cumin, and steer clear of excessive tea, coffee, and cold drinks. Individuals with pre-existing conditions such as acid reflux, gastritis, ulcers, or other digestive disorders should strictly avoid cold drinks. It is essential to consult a doctor if one experiences recurrent episodes of acidity.

According to medical experts, the treatment for gas and acidity depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. In mild cases, doctors typically recommend dietary and lifestyle modifications. Some patients may be prescribed antacids and medications to alleviate gas. If the problem persists or recurs frequently—or if symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or difficulty swallowing manifest—doctors may recommend an endoscopy or other diagnostic tests to identify conditions such as ulcers, GERD, or other digestive disorders. Once the precise cause has been identified, appropriate treatment is administered.
