To develop computer-based examination centres, the NTA has requested the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to collect information from government institutions about their IT infrastructure and available space. AICTE has sought details of available information technology (IT) infrastructure and space from government institutions under its jurisdiction to assess the feasibility of setting up Standard Test Centers (STC) across the country.

AICTE has clarified that information is sought only from government colleges and institutions recognized by AICTE. A senior NTA official said that the work of Computer Based Test (CBT) centers cannot be outsourced to small private organizations and the selection of centers will have to be done only after evaluation based on strict norms. Being the technical education regulator, AICTE has several technical colleges where necessary infrastructure facilities are available.

The move comes amid a major overhaul of the NTA. Amid nationwide protests after the question paper was leaked, the central government announced that the medical entrance exam, NEET-UG, will be conducted as a computer-based test (CBT) from 2027 instead of a pen-and-paper test. “Considering the gradual change in examination patterns and the need for a geographically wide network of examination centres, NTA is assessing the availability of suitable infrastructure in government institutions across the country,” AICTE said in a letter to heads of institutions.

Organizations are directed to ensure that all information provided by them is accurate, complete and duly verified by the concerned competent authority. The technical education regulator has also provided institutions with a format seeking details of the number of computers in operation, other IT infrastructure, networking and internet connectivity, alternative power arrangements, CCTV and facilities. It has also sought information on available space in institutions.
