The Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab will have to face elections early next year. After Delhi, now the party’s only hope is Punjab. In such a situation, the party is putting full emphasis on Punjab. The party wants to form a government in Punjab again on the model of Delhi. School education was an important part of the Delhi model and AAP is now playing on the front foot on school education in Punjab. In the recent national education ranking given to the party, Punjab stood first in the entire country. The Punjab government is now celebrating this in all schools.

Punjab government is now talking about education revolution in Punjab. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said, ‘For decades it was believed that quality education was not possible in government schools, but Punjab has proved this notion wrong. This rank is a proof of the education revolution that has arisen from our classrooms.’ The government’s campaign regarding ranking of schools, changes in government schools, mega PTM and education model seems to be intensifying.

Government talking about education revolution

Punjab government is now talking about education revolution in Punjab. After getting the first rank in the NITI Aayog report, the government is promoting it on a large scale. For this, mega parent-teacher meetings were organized simultaneously in more than 19 thousand government schools across the state. The government presented it not just as a program but as a public demonstration of education reforms.

Work started on Delhi model

In Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party had kept education at the center of its politics since its first term. Government school infrastructure, classrooms, teacher training and school results were consistently presented as electoral and administrative achievements. In subsequent elections, the party included this as one of its biggest achievements and made it an important part of its strategy to return to power. Arvind Kejriwal was praised across the country for his work in the education sector. Now a similar pattern is visible in Punjab also.

The Punjab government is constantly pushing for changes in schools, teacher training, budget increases and learning outcomes. In the statements issued by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Education Department, education reform is being included among the biggest achievements of the government. The infrastructure of schools is being strengthened. Along with this, initiatives like ‘School of Eminence’ are also being taken.

What did the opposition say?

Even though the Aam Aadmi Party government is continuously campaigning on the basis of the first rank given to Punjab, the opposition is attacking the party. All the opposition leaders, including the Congress party, are sharing information on social media that the ranking of schools in Punjab was good even during their government.

Education the biggest narrative?

There is still time for elections, but the way the Punjab government is continuously presenting schools and education reforms as a political and administrative achievement, it has definitely started the discussion whether like Delhi, education in Punjab is also being prepared as a big model for returning to power. At present it is clearly visible that in the politics of Punjab, schools have now become not only a place of education but also a center of return to power for AAP. However, the opposition is calling it empty promises of the ruling party.
