TRIBUN-PAPUA.COM, MIMIKA – The excitement for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has begun to sweep across Mimika Regency, Central Papua. Seasonal traders and clothing stores have started displaying flags of participating nations at various bustling locations, as local enthusiasm grows for the world’s most prestigious football tournament, which will be held from 12 June to 19 July 2026.
Many vendors are taking advantage of this momentum to earn profits by selling flags, jerseys, and other World Cup-themed accessories.
Arman, the owner of a clothing and accessories store on Yos Sudarso Street in Timika, said he began selling national flags of participating countries about ten days ago.
“It’s been around ten days since we started selling World Cup country flags. The ones we stock the most are from major football nations like England, Argentina, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain,” Arman told Tribun-Papua.com in Timika on Tuesday (3 June 2026).
He explained that flags of various sizes are the most sought-after items by customers as the tournament draws near.
“For small sizes, 90 x 60 centimetres, prices start from Rp40,000 to Rp50,000. Medium-sized flags are priced between Rp55,000 and Rp65,000, large ones between Rp70,000 and Rp85,000, and jumbo sizes can reach Rp110,000 per piece,” he said.
In addition, flag garlands or buntings about 15 meters long are also available, priced at Rp150,000, representing various participating nations.
Beyond flags, sales of national team jerseys have also increased. Arman offers Thailand-grade original jerseys priced between Rp175,000 and Rp210,000 each.
He noted that popular teams such as Argentina, Portugal, the Netherlands, and England are among the most in-demand choices for buyers.
“Usually, teams with star players attract the most attention. Argentina and Portugal are among the top favourites for customers,” he explained.
Arman observed that consumer spending this year has risen compared to previous periods. He believes the larger number of participating nations in the 2026 World Cup has contributed to this growing enthusiasm.
“Compared to before, there’s definitely an increase this year. Maybe because there are more countries participating, people are more excited to buy flags and jerseys to support their favourite teams,” he said.
He added that Timika is among the towns with high football enthusiasm, making him optimistic that sales of World Cup merchandise will continue to rise.
“Today alone, we’ve sold around ten flags, not counting other World Cup accessories,” he shared.
According to Arman, the number of customers keeps increasing daily as the 2026 World Cup approaches. Traders are hopeful that the global football frenzy will further boost merchandise sales and provide additional income throughout the tournament.
