Tata Tiago EV: The safest family option in a low budget

When it comes to affordable electric cars in India, the dominance of Tata Motors is clearly visible. The company’s most popular hatchback Tata Tiago EV is the strongest contender in this segment. After the recently introduced updated model, its starting price starts from Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 9.99 lakh for the top variant. Tata Motors is also offering this car under the BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) scheme, bringing its starting effective price down to just Rs 4.69 lakh (battery rental extra).

In Tiago EV, customers get the option of two different battery packs. Its medium range variant comes with a 19.2 kWh battery which gives a range of about 250 km. At the same time, its long range variant comes with a 24 kWh battery, which provides a driving range of 293 to 315 kilometers on a single charge. In terms of features, it has been provided with features like 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers and cruise control.

MG Comet EV: The most unique and affordable car for urban driving

If most of your journey is in narrow city streets and heavy traffic, then MG Comet EV from MG Motor can prove to be the best option for you. The ex-showroom price of this 2-door and 4-seater compact electric car ranges between Rs 7.50 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. However, if you buy it under the company’s BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) scheme, you will get it at a starting price of only Rs 4.99 lakh, in which you will have to pay battery rental of ₹ 3.20 per kilometer.

The MG Comet EV gets a 17.3 kWh battery pack, which gives a range of 230 km on a single charge (ARAI certified). The range is perfectly adequate for everyday city driving. Its cabin gets premium features like twin 10.25-inch screens (for infotainment and instrument cluster), wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and LED lighting setup which make it extremely modern.

Experts’ opinion and what is better for customers?

Impact on general public and way forward

Currently, the network of public charging stations is expanding rapidly in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. The biggest advantage of buying an electric car in a budget of less than Rs 10 lakh is that it is offering up to 100% rebate in road tax and registration fees in many states. According to experts, with the improvement of charging infrastructure in the coming months, there will be further increase in the sales of these affordable cars. If your daily running expenses are high, an affordable EV will prove to be a much better saver for you than the combined EMI and fuel cost of a petrol car.
