The round of resignations has started before the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Rishabh Pant has decided to step down from the captaincy of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). LSG, led by Pant, finished last in IPL 2026, after which Pant informed the franchise about his decision on Friday (May 29).

LSG quoted its Director of Cricket Tom Moody as saying that Rishabh has approached the franchise and we have accepted it. Taking such decisions is never easy. We are grateful to Rishabh for whatever contribution he has made to this dressing room as captain. Now our entire focus is on strengthening the team again and creating a better structure, so that the franchise can reach its best level in the future.

LSG was in bad shape under Pant’s captaincy

Wicketkeeper batsman Pant became the captain of LSG before the 2025 season. The franchise gave him the command of the team after buying him for Rs 27 crore in the mega auction. However, the performance of Pant and the team was nothing special. In IPL 2025, LSG finished seventh in the points table after winning 6 out of 14 matches. Along with captaincy, Pant also flopped with the bat. He could score only 269 runs at a strike rate of 133.16.

After a disappointing season, questions were being raised about his captaincy and place in the team. However, LSG management kept faith in him and gave him a chance to lead the team in IPL 2026 also. This season, LSG started the season on a good note by winning 2 in the first 3 matches, but after that it had to face defeat in 6 consecutive matches and was out of the race for the playoffs. LSG could manage only 4 wins in 14 matches in the current season and had to finish at the last position.

LSG will release Pant?

Rishabh Pant is the most expensive player in IPL history. LSG is spending Rs 27 crore on him every season but he is not able to contribute to the team. After being a flop last season, Pant was able to score only 312 runs at a strike rate of 138.05 in IPL 2026. After leaving the captaincy, the big question now is whether LSG will retain him?
