The Japan national football team is set to take on Iceland in an international friendly match tonight.

The kick-off for the Japan vs Iceland game is scheduled for 17:25 WIB on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

The Samurai Blue have once again secured their spot in the main tournament after an impressive qualifying campaign, recording seven wins and two draws in 10 matches, finishing at the top of Group C with 23 points.

Ranked 18th in the world, Japan has now qualified for their eighth consecutive FIFA World Cup, having never missed the tournament since their debut in 1998.

In the last two editions, the East Asian side even managed to reach the Round of 16.

Under head coach Hajime Moriyasu, Japan has been in excellent form, winning five matches in a row, including two 1-0 victories over Scotland and England in 2026.

Placed in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Tunisia, and Sweden, Japan will play their final friendly before flying to the United States, hosting Iceland in Tokyo on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Iceland once again failed to qualify for the World Cup, finishing third in Group D with seven points from six matches.

The Nordic team secured only two wins, both against bottom side Azerbaijan, but could not match the performance of group leaders France and Ukraine.

After their historic debut in 2018, Iceland will have to wait for another chance to return to the World Cup. However, with the crucial UEFA Nations League campaign approaching, they aim to build momentum for potential promotion.

So far this year, it has been a difficult run for Strakarnir okkar, who suffered a 4-0 defeat against Mexico in their opening match before drawing twice — 2-2 with World Cup co-hosts Canada and 1-1 with Haiti.

Head-to-Head and Statistics: Japan vs Iceland

The two sides have met only four times previously, with Japan winning three and losing once.

Japan and Iceland last faced each other in February 2012, when the Samurai Blue claimed a 3-1 victory in a friendly match.

Iceland are winless in their last four matches.

Japan, on the other hand, have won their last five consecutive games and remain unbeaten in their last six.

Prediction: Japan vs Iceland

On paper, the Samurai Blue are the stronger team and are expected to handle this match comfortably.
