Oslo. The fourth round of Norway Chess 2026 witnessed another exciting day in Oslo, with the much-awaited match between world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and reigning world champion Gukesh Dommaraju yielding a decisive result. Playing with the black pieces, Carlsen gradually outclassed Gukesh in a complex game. The situation remained balanced for most of the game, but the Norwegian star took his chance in the midgame.
Due to increasing pressure and time constraints, Gukesh was unable to hold his position, giving Carlsen the opportunity to convert his lead into a win and secure an important classical victory. The win gives Carlsen valuable points in the tournament standings as he looks to overcome a slow start on home soil.
The remaining two matches of the open tournament ended in a draw after a tough fight. There was a strategic match between Wesley So and Alireza Firozha, in which neither player was able to take a decisive lead and the game eventually ended in a peaceful draw. So later won the Armageddon game and won the extra point. There was a balanced match between Vincent Keymer and Praggnanandha, in which both the players had chances to win, but in the end the match also ended in a draw.
Praggnananda then won the Armageddon game and earned valuable extra points. After the fourth round, Turquoise remains on top of the tournament, while Carlsen’s win significantly strengthened his position in the points table. Armageddon deciders set the tone for the Norway Women’s Chess Tournament. The Norway Women’s Chess Tournament featured three hard-fought classical matches, all of which ended in draws and were ultimately decided by Armageddon matches.
The match played between Koneru Humpy and Zhu Jiner ended in a draw after a tense clash with neither player able to take a decisive lead. Later, Zhu Jin’er gained extra points by winning the Armageddon game. The classical match played between world champion Xu Wenjun and Bibisara Assaubaeva also ended in a draw.
Asaubaeva had a slight advantage in many situations of the game, but Xu kept the game balanced by playing precise defense. Asaubaeva later won the Armageddon game and took the extra point. In the third match, there was a tough fight between Divya Deshmukh and Anna Muzichuk.
For most of the middle part of the game, Divya was in the lead and kept pushing for the win, but Muzychuk made smart saves and eventually the game ended in a draw. Muzychuk then won the Armageddon game, giving him important points. After the fourth round, Assaubaeva is still leading among the ‘Norway Chess Women’, while Anna Muzichuk, Divya Deshmukh and Zhu Jin’er remain close to her.
