Manchester United have initiated discussions to offer Bruno Fernandes a new contract, despite the presence of a £57 million release clause in his existing deal, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
Fernandes recently matched the Premier League record for the highest number of assists in a single season (21), rounding off a remarkable campaign for the Manchester United playmaker.
The 31-year-old’s current contract runs out next year, but the Red Devils are keen to secure his services at Old Trafford for a longer period.
The Portuguese international, who has earned 87 caps for his country, has attracted attention from several Saudi Pro League and European clubs. However, initial talks have focused on an extension, as Manchester United are determined to keep him.
Fernandes played a crucial part in the team’s revival under Michael Carrick, leading their return to the UEFA Champions League.
With nine goals and 33 big chances created across 35 Premier League appearances, Fernandes’ contribution has been immense, and a new contract would be a fitting reward.
He was named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the fifth time, honoured as the Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association, and was undoubtedly the driving force behind United’s progress.
Nevertheless, Manchester United cannot continue relying solely on Fernandes to carry them through another campaign.
The Red Devils must develop a midfield structure that enables him to perform consistently at his best, rather than requiring him to cover for weaknesses in the team’s setup.
With Casemiro set to depart and Kobbie Mainoo most effective when given the freedom to advance play rather than constantly defending, United’s top priority this summer should be securing a natural holding midfielder.
A player with athleticism, positional awareness, and the ability to protect the back line would immediately enhance the team’s balance and allow Fernandes to focus on his creative strengths.
If United decide to pursue Elliot Anderson, he should not be seen as the complete solution to their midfield problems.
Anderson would likely compete with Mainoo for a starting spot rather than forming a defensive partnership with him.
The ideal approach would be to bring in both Anderson and a specialist defensive midfielder to strengthen the squad.
Fernandes has once again proven himself as one of Europe’s most prolific creators. Now, it’s up to Manchester United to finally build a midfield around him that complements his exceptional abilities.
