Manchester United are reportedly reconsidering their transfer priorities, shifting attention from acquiring a winger to securing a new left-back, largely due to Patrick Dorgu’s impressive attacking performances.
When the Danish youngster first emerged through Lecce’s academy, he was hailed as one of the most promising full-backs in Italian football. However, his development took an interesting turn as he began to feature higher up the pitch.
After earning promotion to Lecce’s senior squad, Dorgu was frequently deployed as an inverted right-winger in a 4-3-3 setup. Following his move to Manchester United in January 2025, he initially operated as a wing-back under Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation. However, Michael Carrick’s subsequent shift to a traditional four-man defence reignited discussions about Dorgu’s ideal position.
When Carrick succeeded Amorim in January, he made the bold call to position Dorgu as a left winger in his 4-2-3-1 system. The decision raised eyebrows, partly because it came at the expense of Matheus Cunha, and also because traditional wingers have become a rarity in modern football dominated by inverted wide players.
Nonetheless, Carrick’s gamble paid off. Dorgu scored in each of his first two games under the new boss — a 2-0 win against Manchester City and a thrilling 3-2 victory over eventual league champions Arsenal. His spectacular strike against the Gunners earned him the Goal of the Year Award.
Unfortunately, Dorgu’s momentum was halted by an injury sustained during the triumph in North London, sidelining him for over three months. He made his comeback on the final day of the season, delivering an outstanding performance in United’s commanding 3-0 win over Brighton.
The ex-Lecce defender opened the scoring with a header, enabling Bruno Fernandes to set a new Premier League record for assists in a single season. Dorgu later returned the favour by providing the assist for his captain’s goal to seal the result.
According to journalist Steven Railston of the Manchester Evening News, Dorgu’s attacking impact has convinced Manchester United’s hierarchy to reconsider their pursuit of a new left winger. The club, previously linked with players such as Yan Diomande and Morgan Rogers, now appear reluctant to invest heavily in that area. Instead, their focus has turned to strengthening the midfield with two or three new additions.
With Dorgu flourishing on the flank, Carrick and his staff are reportedly leaning towards confirming the 21-year-old and Cunha as their primary left-wing options for the upcoming campaign.
As a result, funds that were initially earmarked for a new winger could be redirected towards reinforcing the left-back position, as United cannot afford to head into next season relying solely on Luke Shaw as their only natural full-back on that side.
Shaw admirably featured in all 38 Premier League matches this season, but with Champions League football returning, such a workload is unlikely to be sustainable.
Railston has identified Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall and Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly as potential candidates for the role. However, Manchester United could also opt to strengthen internally by promoting from within their youth ranks.
Harry Amass, who previously featured for the senior team under Amorim, is set to return from an injury-hit loan spell at Norwich City. Meanwhile, promising academy players Diego Leon and Godwill Kukonki — both highly rated at Carrington — will be eager to make a strong impression during pre-season and push for first-team opportunities.
