Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has once again played a pivotal role in the club’s resurgence this season. Since his arrival from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, the Portuguese playmaker has firmly established himself as the creative heartbeat of the Red Devils at Old Trafford.
Fernandes has been in outstanding form, concluding the campaign with nine goals and 22 assists. The 31-year-old also broke the record for the highest number of assists in a single Premier League season, providing 21 set-ups in league matches.
His performances were instrumental in securing United’s third-place finish and qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League. As a result, Fernandes swept multiple individual accolades, including the FWA Footballer of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Season awards.
The Portuguese star also claimed his fifth Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award—an unprecedented record—and was voted United’s Players’ Player of the Year. However, despite his success, speculation about his long-term future has kept fans anxious.
Fernandes will be entering the final year of his current contract this summer and is yet to agree to an extension. The midfield maestro, fondly called the ‘Portuguese Magnifico,’ was strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford last summer but ultimately stayed on.
That decision proved crucial to United’s progress this season, particularly under Michael Carrick, who restored Fernandes to his preferred No. 10 role. With Carrick recently confirmed as the club’s permanent manager, there is renewed optimism at Old Trafford.
The club’s hierarchy plans to strengthen the squad further over the summer to give Carrick the best possible chance of success. Yet, Fernandes continues to be seen as the central figure in United’s ambitions moving forward.
Carrick has publicly expressed confidence that Fernandes will remain at Old Trafford, and now renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided an encouraging update for supporters.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that Manchester United have already begun internal efforts to secure Fernandes’ future. He stated: “What I can tell you is that, according to my information, behind the scenes, movements have already started for Bruno Fernandes to stay at Manchester United.”
He further added: “This summer, from what I understand, Man Utd are prepared to make efforts to keep Bruno. So, contacts are ongoing. Manchester United want to continue with Bruno Fernandes.”
Romano elaborated further: “Man Utd want to avoid temptations from Europe and Saudi Arabia, where there has been long-standing interest in Bruno — going back three, two, and even one year ago. My understanding is that Man Utd have already started talks behind the scenes to ensure Bruno Fernandes stays and continues at the club.”
He continued: “It’s a wish shared by the ownership, the management, the coach, the technical staff, and his team-mates. Everyone at the club appreciates Bruno’s leadership in the dressing room. So, yes, Man Utd are pushing strongly and making every effort to retain Bruno Fernandes. Work is in progress on this front.”
Fernandes has once again demonstrated this season why he is such a unique talent. With proper reinforcements around him, the Portuguese international could help Manchester United return to their past glory. It is now imperative for INEOS to secure his new contract and invest wisely during the upcoming transfer window.
