New Delhi: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that the much-awaited trade agreement between India and America may be finalized soon. Rubio said that this agreement will be beneficial and sustainable for both countries and will advance the mutual interests of both. Rubio made this comment to Foreign Minister S. In a joint press conference after extensive talks with Jaishankar. There were discussions between the two leaders on increasing trade, rare minerals, energy and defense cooperation. This is the first visit of the US Secretary of State to India at a time when relations between the two countries had seen tension over trade and tariff policies in the last one year.
Rubio said, “We have made a lot of progress and I think that the US and India will have a trade agreement that will last for a long time, that will be beneficial to both sides and will take into account the national interests.” He said that the trade policy of the Donald Trump administration is not to target any particular country, but its purpose is to balance America’s approach towards the global trade system. Rubio said, “The President did not say that tension should be created regarding trade with India. He said that there is an imbalance in America’s trade system and it needs to be corrected.
He said that this issue is not limited to India only and the topic of trade imbalance has come up in talks with almost every country in the world. The US Secretary of State said that the US trade delegation will come to India very soon to take the trade agreement forward. He also said that America has also had trade issues with allies like the European Union.
Rubio said, “India is one of the largest economies in the world and is also a major trading partner of America. The process of correcting the trade imbalance with a country with such a large and extensive trading relationship is more complex and comprehensive.” He said that the US objective is to make such trade agreements that are beneficial for the US as well as its trading partners.
