Brazil have set a strict medical deadline for Neymar to confirm his spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s final World Cup squad after the forward suffered another injury scare. The Santos star remains a major doubt for the upcoming friendly fixtures following a grade two calf strain that raised serious concerns during the first phase of the national team’s training camp.

Concerns dominate early training sessions

The injury to Neymar’s right calf overshadowed the opening day of Brazil’s World Cup preparations at Granja Comary, further clouding his availability for the tournament. According to Globo, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) took extensive measures to maintain confidentiality, temporarily closing a local diagnostic centre to the public so the forward could undergo his scans privately. Although Santos’ medical staff initially cleared him, subsequent tests confirmed a grade two oedema, ruling him out of field training and making his participation against Panama highly doubtful.

National team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar confirmed on Thursday: “Neymar arrived at Granja Comary yesterday, went through the full set of medical exams, and the MRI revealed a grade 2 muscle injury. He is continuing his treatment, and we expect him to be fit again within two to three weeks.”

Neymar downplays injury worries

Despite the internal anxiety and the projected three-week recovery window, the 34-year-old striker publicly dismissed concerns over his condition. Before joining the national squad, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player faced intense scrutiny over his fitness at Vila Belmiro. When questioned by journalists about how his calf felt, Neymar responded casually, saying, “It’s here, all intact.” He also brushed aside suggestions that the injury might threaten his World Cup participation, retorting, “What’s the problem?”

Management adopts cautious approach

As reported by Torcedores, Carlo Ancelotti has personally spoken with Neymar, who agreed to stay with the team even if his role becomes limited. The national team’s medical and technical staff are working closely with Santos’ doctors and the player’s personal trainers to speed up his recovery ahead of the tournament’s opening matches.

Under FIFA regulations, teams can replace injured players up to 24 hours before their first World Cup fixture, prompting the CBF to use Brazil’s friendly against Egypt in the United States on June 6 as the decisive test to determine whether Neymar will remain in the squad or be replaced.

Egypt test to seal Neymar’s fate

Brazil are scheduled to play Panama on May 31 and Egypt on June 6 before beginning their World Cup journey in Group J against Morocco. The match against Egypt stands as Neymar’s final chance to prove his readiness for the group stage. As the Selecao aim for a record-extending sixth world title, their talisman must now race against time to turn his confident words into match-ready form.
