CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A 13-year-old girl in New Zealand first made a pen pal request in 1985 for a pair of purple sunglasses featured in a magazine.
Recently, a writer traveled 9,000 miles from New Hampshire to deliver the long-awaited gift, illustrating the enduring appeal of pen pal connections.
While the agency that originally facilitated their correspondence has since closed, various pen pal programs have emerged or thrived in the digital age. Despite changes in postal services across countries like New Zealand and Denmark, many enthusiasts report a revival in letter writing, highlighting a growing interest in tangible communication.
The Demand for Handwritten Correspondence
Rachel Syme, a writer for The New Yorker, initiated a pen pal program during the COVID-19 pandemic, attracting over 15,000 participants for her Penpalooza project in 2020. She continues to receive hundreds of new requests for pen pals, particularly during her book signings for 'Syme's Letter Writer - A Guide to Modern Correspondence.'
"People are very interested in physical, analog things right now," Syme stated, noting the appeal of letter writing for a younger generation accustomed to digital communication. She emphasized the tactile, intentional nature of handwritten correspondence as a welcome change from the fast-paced digital world.
Personal Experiences and Historical Context
Reflecting on her early correspondence with Molly Nunns, who lived in New Zealand, the writer recalled the excitement of receiving letters filled with personal stories and heartfelt sentiments. Their friendship blossomed over the years, culminating in a deep connection that endured despite geographical distances.
Julie Delbridge, who joined International Pen Friends in 1979, echoed similar sentiments about the value of pen pal relationships. Her experience of exchanging letters with friends from around the world provided her with joy and perspective during challenging times in her life.
Pen Pal Programs in Education
In 2021, the U.S. Postal Service launched a pen pal initiative, sending materials to 25,000 elementary school classrooms. Older students are also engaging in letter writing, with some medical students in Texas creating anonymous pen pal programs for peer support.
At Villanova University, a literature class requires students to send letters to each other, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful communication. Professor Kamran Javadizadeh noted that physical letters encourage deeper connections compared to instant messaging.
Digital Innovations in Pen Pals
An app called Slowly merges technology with the traditional pen pal experience, allowing users to send messages that are delayed, mimicking the anticipation of receiving a letter. Co-founder JoJo Chan reported that the app has attracted 10 million users since its launch in 2017.
Despite the rise of digital tools, Syme remains committed to the joys of physical letter writing. Her book emphasizes the pleasures of crafting personal letters, noting that the essence of communication lies in the content rather than the embellishments.
The Enduring Impact of Pen Pal Relationships
The writer and Molly met in person after 15 years of correspondence, solidifying their unique bond. Their emotional reunion highlighted the profound connections fostered through letter writing.
Molly expressed her amazement at their journey, stating, "Who would have thought when we started writing in 1985 that one day you'd be sitting here? It's quite amazing." The exchange of letters has provided both individuals with cherished memories and a lasting friendship.
