IPL 2026: CSK Paying Price for Selection Mistakes and Lack of Direction
Cricket Gully | April 28, 2026 4:39 PM CST

Stephen Fleming has used his selection method which he calls 'consistent player selection' as a fundamental element of his coaching approach at Chennai Super Kings throughout his entire career.

The five-time champions have usually avoided making frequent changes, even when players struggled for form. The team decided to give their players extended time on the field to demonstrate their abilities.

CSK has implemented an inconsistent selection system which deviates from their established selection process for this season. The Super Kings organization demonstrated poor management throughout the entire situation according to the team's performance in their game against the Gujarat Titans on Sunday. The team did not need to modify their starting lineup after achieving a decisive 103-run victory against the Mumbai Indians.

The hosts chose to exclude Sarfaraz Khan from their team and selected Urvil Patel instead. The situation appeared to be uncertain yet the events that unfolded during the fourth over after two wickets fell quickly created a puzzling situation. CSK used Sarfaraz as their Impact Player which eliminated their ability to field an additional bowler at a later time.

This was only the latest in several strange decisions. The second match of the season saw Jamie Overton who performed well during the season opener against Rajasthan Royals being dropped from the team. The Englishman has since secured his place and become one of their best performers. Prashant Veer who scored a fast 43 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru has not participated in any games since that match.

CSK lost its first three matches before winning back-to-back home games. Akeal Hosein, a left-arm spinner, provided essential support to the team's insufficient bowling resources during the short period of his return. The West Indian player was benched for the Sunrisers Hyderabad match because the opposing team included three left-handed batsmen in their first batting order. Ruturaj’s side then lost that match.

Akeal made a powerful comeback by defeating MI with his four wickets for 17 runs during his match-winning performance.

After losing five out of eight games, CSK faces a danger of missing the playoffs for the third consecutive season. The selection errors that occurred during the game will require thorough examination if that situation occurs. The think-tank must implement an essential guideline which states that existing systems should remain unchanged when they function properly.
