Uber Rapido Suspended Chandigarh: If you live in Chandigarh city and use online cabs for daily commute, then this news is very important for you. Chandigarh’s State Transport Authority (STA) has suspended the aggregator licenses of both Uber and Rapido for 6 months for violating the rules. The decision has been implemented with immediate effect and will be applicable till March 2027, which will have a major impact on cab facilities in the city.

Main reason for suspension

The STA has clarified that the two companies were repeatedly violating the Chandigarh Administration Motor Vehicle Aggregators Regulations 2025, following which the stern order was issued on September 8. The list of vehicles assigned by companies in July 2026 included some private vehicles, which are not allowed for cab services as per the rules. Despite repeated time and opportunities, the companies did not follow the government policies properly.

Driver safety and fixed fare rules were introduced

According to STA Secretary Nitish Singla, Uber and Rapido were given enough time to comply with regulations to regular health checks for drivers, term insurance, required training and fixed fares for customers. However, both companies continued to defy the rules instead of reforming. Also, many complaints were received from customers against these companies as a result of which this drastic step has been taken.

Add to the inconvenience of passengers

Earlier, the licenses of Ola and InDrive in Chandigarh were also suspended for 6 months. Now all the 4 major cab aggregators serving the city have been completely banned with Uber and Rapido also shutting down. The decision has reduced options for thousands of citizens who commute daily and has created a major transportation issue.

Now India’s dependence on taxis and local transport will increase

With all major app-based cab services suspended, only the ‘Bharat Taxi’ service operated by Sahakari Taxi Cooperative Limited will now be the primary option in the city. Citizens of Chandigarh will have to depend more on local transport services and buses for commuting in the coming days due to lack of options.
