Lifestyle Desk – Cashews, almonds, walnuts and other dry fruits kept in the kitchen taste good only when they have slight crispness and freshness. But many times after opening the packet, dry fruits get sealed after coming in contact with air and moisture within a few days. They lose their crunch and start feeling soft or rubbery when eaten. In such a situation, instead of throwing them away, they can be made crisp again with some easy methods.
Why does dampness occur?
Moisture can enter dry fruits very quickly. If they are kept in open containers, thin packets or in a place where there is excess steam and humidity, they absorb moisture from the air. This is why cashews and almonds lose their natural crunch after some time. Especially dry fruits kept near gas, sink or hot place in the kitchen can get affected quickly.

How to make dried fruits crispy
If cashews or almonds are lightly shelled, they can be lightly roasted to crisp them up again. For this, fry them for a few minutes on low flame without oil. Keep stirring continuously so that they do not burn. After cooling, keep them in an airtight container. Even if you use an oven or air fryer, it is better to heat it for a while at a lower temperature.
Keep in mind that roasting on high flame or for a long time can change the taste of dry fruits and they can also become bitter. Therefore, adopt the method of mild heat and short time.
Airtight container is most important
To keep dry fruits fresh for a long time, it is most important to keep them in an airtight container. Glass or good quality food-grade airtight containers can be a better option for this. Avoid opening the box again and again. Take out a small amount as per need and use it and keep the remaining dry fruits tightly closed.
When is the right time to keep it in the fridge?
If the weather is very hot or humid, keeping dry fruits in the refrigerator can also be an option. Especially low temperature can help in preserving dry fruits purchased in large quantities for a long time. However, instead of keeping them in the open, it is important to keep them in a well-sealed container or pack, so that they do not absorb the moisture and odor of other things in the fridge.
Keep away from sunlight and moisture
Selection of place is also important while storing dry fruits. Do not keep them near gas stove, oven, sink or cupboard where there is high heat and moisture. Protect them from direct sunlight also. Dry fruits stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry and dark place can retain their taste and texture for a longer period.
However, if dry fruits start giving off stale or strange smell, taste bad or appear moldy, it is not advisable to re-roast them and eat them. It is better to throw away such dry fruits. By adopting proper storage, not only their crunch can be maintained, but the taste of the food can also be kept fresh for a long time.
