Ring Doorbells might rule the roost when it comes to home security, but these Amazon-owned cameras are about to get another new rival. The technology team at Tapo have just announced the launch of their new gadget doorbell, and it has some nifty features that Ring could definitely do with matching.
Firstly, Tapo says that its new Doorbell Pro is not only the brand’s first to capture content in stunning 4K resolution, but it also doesn’t require a subscription.
Anyone who owns a Ring will know that some useful extras are tucked behind a paywall. So, without that fee (starting from £4.99), users can’t access recordings or receive smart alerts.
Tapo isn’t fully going down that route with the Pro Doorbell providing alerts for free and even offering the ability to store any footage it captures on a microSD card (not supplied by the way).
Those wanting online cloud storage will need to sign up for a Tapo Care Plan, but it’s not essential, as most features are free.
Another bonus of this device is that it offers both wired and wireless connections.
Those wanting an easy installation can simply use batteries to power it, whilst anyone opting for a more fussy wired connection will get bonus features such as continuous 24-hour recording.
Right now, Ring users have to choose between a wired or a wireless model at the checkout rather than getting a device that offers both connectivity options in one.
Like Ring, the Tapo Doorbell Pro is fully weatherproof, offers two-way talk so you can chat to whoever has pressed the bell, and it can detect people, pets or deliveries being made.
There’s also smarter radar detection, which Tapo says will cut down on false alerts, and its 4K recording with a head-to-toe view offers crystal-clear footage of who or what is outside your home.
Tapo says it will start shipping next month.
This is one area where Ring still stands out. The Tapo Doorbell Pro costs £219.99, which is over £130 more than its Amazon rival.
The Tapo device isn’t cheap, but it can be used without paying per month, and it does have some pretty fancy features.
It could be one to watch out for if you want an alternative to Ring.
