Liverpool remain in the race for Ismaila Sarr as Cody Gakpo’s future stays uncertain

Liverpool are continuing their efforts to sign Ismaila Sarr, even after Crystal Palace turned down an opening bid worth about £50m.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola is keen to add three more players before the transfer window shuts, including two capable of playing in wide areas. One of those is set to be France winger Bradley Barcola, with Paris Saint-Germain having accepted an offer of £100m plus a possible £20m in add-ons for the 23-year-old.

Although Liverpool have cooled their interest in Yankuba Minteh because of Brighton’s reluctance to sell, The Independent understands the club have not been put off from trying to strike a deal for Sarr.

The 28-year-old Senegal international is comfortable on the right wing, an area Liverpool see as especially important to reinforce following Mohamed Salah’s departure earlier this summer.

Cody Gakpo could still leave Anfield before Tuesday’s deadline if Liverpool complete their incoming business. Tottenham have shown interest in Gakpo, and The Independent understands Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi is pushing for the club to move for the Netherlands international despite already spending more than £300m this summer.

Speaking on Thursday about Gakpo’s future, Iraola said: “When the market is open, you cannot guarantee anything with anyone.”
