Lucknow, Aug 22 (PTI): Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak on Saturday said the demands of students associated with the "reservation reform" movement would be placed before the BJP's central leadership and a delegation of the protesters would meet a Union minister within the next two days.

Pathak made the remarks at a press conference in Lucknow alongside representatives of the protest, which is being held at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. He said the government stood with the youth and was committed to helping realise their aspirations.

"The demands of the students' delegation have been heard carefully and they have been assured of appropriate action," Pathak said.

He said a letter submitted by the students would also be forwarded to the central leadership and efforts would be made through dialogue and constructive initiatives to resolve their "justified demands".

The movement is being led by anti-reservation activists, including Harsh Dubey, Mrityunjay Pathak and Shiva Sharma.

Dubey said the students had held a peaceful protest and their main demand was that all young people should get equal opportunities. He thanked Pathak for assuring them of a meeting with the Union minister within two days.

In a post on X in Hindi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said, "The conspiracy to end reservations under the guise of 'reservation reform' is yet another deep plot against the PDA community." "Reservation is the right of PDA, not the subject of anyone's whim. The BJP and their allies, from time to time, oppose reservations by using vague terms like 'review' or 'reform', or by talking about 'creamy layer' or advising 'to give up reservations'. These are nothing but different masks for the ongoing attempts to trample the reservation rights granted to centuries-oppressed and deprived people.

"Reservation was there, reservation is there, reservation will remain!" Yadav added. PTI CDN NAV AMJ AMJ
