Malda (WB), Aug 22 (PTI): A 32-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in West Bengal's Malda district on Saturday, following which TMC claimed that she killed herself amid delays in receiving Annapurna Yojana benefits.
Police said the body of Anita Khatun was found hanging at her residence in Bachahar area of Gazole around 10 am.
A preliminary inquiry pointed to a dispute between the woman and her husband over filling up the form of the scheme, besides regular domestic violence, they said.
A case of unnatural death has been registered, and an investigation started, they added.
In a social media post, the TMC said welfare promise means little when people are forced to run from office to office to receive what they were promised.
"The @BJP4Bengal Government has failed women across Bengal. In Malda, a woman reportedly died by suicide amid delays in receiving Annapurna Bhandar benefits. Her family says repeated visits to the block office yielded nothing," the party claimed.
"How many more women must suffer before this government takes accountability? From Nari Suraksha to Nari Kalyan, BJP’s promises ring hollow," it added.
Beneficiaries of the scheme receive Rs 3,000 financial assistance per month.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said 1.4 crore women have received the benefit in August. PTI COR BSM SOM
