Lamborghini Revuelto SV’s toughest development hurdle was managing heat

The Lamborghini Revuelto SV is here, bringing with it genuinely extreme performance. However, keeping the V-12 supercar within its ideal operating temperature window during development proved to be a major challenge, according to Revuelto product line director Alessandro Farmerschi.

If the standard Revuelto’s 1001-horsepower peak already sounded staggering, the Revuelto SV raises that output to 1050, aided by a larger 7.3 kWh battery pack. That extra power translates into a claimed 0 to 62 miles per hour time of 2.4 seconds, while the 0-124 mph sprint is said to take 6.7 seconds. Alongside the added pace, Lamborghini also placed strong emphasis on aerodynamics, replacing the regular car’s active rear wing with a fixed carbon fibre unit and introducing new side air inlets. But improving airflow around the Revuelto SV also created fresh complications for Lamborghini’s engineers.

“There comes a point when you have the first prototypes, and you drive the car on the racetrack, and you begin to understand and feel what is happening. Then you say, ‘the packaging is okay, but the cooling system is not cooling as expected.’ At a certain stage, you have a car that goes into de-rating [cutting power] because it is too hot,” Farmerschi told Road & Track. “So you need to start working on the aerodynamics. I change the position of the radiator, and then I can no longer use the fender. Then I need to change the fender. You begin putting all the elements together until you reach the point where you achieve what you want. It is quite a tricky process.”

The problem was that the starting point was already so strong that engineers had very little room to make the adjustments required for the Super Veloce version. “The tricky part is that the Revuelto is already such a high-performing car that you really have to put everything in line and connect the dots to the point where there is stability and repetition,” Farmerschi said. “In terms of performance, it needs to be repeatable.”

Farmerschi explained that consistent performance is crucial for Lamborghini customers, and the Italian carmaker wants the Revuelto SV’s huge performance figures to be repeatable every single day. Because of that, Lamborghini tested the Revuelto SV extensively in both extreme heat and extreme cold.

The effort to manage and disperse heat also carries over to the Revuelto SV’s new CCM-R Plus braking system. This Brembo-derived setup uses long strands of carbon fibre, which are compressed together to create a more even rotor surface. The circular construction of the carbon rotors is said to allow higher and more stable friction, without requiring any pre-bedding.

Lastly, the Revuelto SV borrows some of its performance thinking from its Urus Performante SE sibling. Lamborghini has equipped the Revuelto SV with a 6D sensor, which Farmerschi said is exclusive to the SV, and it uses a three-axis accelerometer to measure roll, pitch and yaw. When combined with the Revuelto SV’s new track-focused Pilota drive mode and a five-stage traction-control system, the 6D sensor is expected to help make this Lamborghini the sharpest V-12 supercar the brand has produced yet.
