Manchester United produced some excellent football in spells but were unable to make their chances count and had to be content with a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg on Saturday.

Michael Carrick will be encouraged by his side’s attacking display, with Amad dictating play during the first half.

Bryan Mbeumo found the net once again, while new arrivals Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans also caught the eye.

The only negative was Mason Mount being forced off with an injury early in the first half. Until then, the England international had been enjoying an excellent pre-season.

So impressive has he been that INEOS were thinking about not bringing in a third midfielder this summer. After what unfolded in Sweden, those plans should certainly have been reconsidered.

Speaking to the club’s media team, the head coach explained that the former Chelsea star had been kicked by one of PSG’s players and that there was no need to take any unnecessary chances.

As a result, Tyler Fletcher was introduced, while the England international spent some time in discussion with the medical staff before making his way down the tunnel.

“He just got a kick. So we just wanted it to be a precaution really, to look after him.

“We want to keep the group strong and we’ve been fortunate to get everyone to this stage fit and well, so we wanted to be careful with that.”

Carrick’s comments, along with footage of Mason Mount walking normally towards the team bus after the match, suggest it was not a serious injury.

But considering the player’s poor record, INEOS would be mistaken not to treat this episode as a warning. They need to sign a defensive midfielder before the transfer window closes.

Carlos Baleba is still interested in a move, and although he is currently injured, the 20-time English league champions could do with making an approach to Brighton & Hove Albion soon.
