Four people have been arrested: Chinese nationals Chen Zhizhi, 38, and Tang Liang, 39, and Vietnamese women Nguyen Thi Lua, 31, and Nguyen Thi Lan Anh, 25. A fifth suspect, Sung Thi Hoan, 26, had her home in Lao Cai Province that borders China searched.
The ring rented cars and kept moving between provinces to avoid detection.
A gold shop in Hai Phong bought a batch of the fakes on May 31 and lost nearly VND150 million (US$5,700). Police caught the group on June 25 as they crossed into Ha Tinh Province in central Vietnam to strike again.
At Hoan’s home, officers seized eight bracelets, seven rings and four necklaces in a rose-gold-colored metal. In all, they recovered about 1.32 kilograms of fake gold along with more jewelry, phones and cash.

Tungsten is nearly as dense as gold, which lets a gold-plated tungsten-and-copper piece carry almost the same weight as the real thing and slip past the heft-and-feel check jewelers use to catch counterfeits made from lighter metals.
The suspects walked in posing as customers selling gold, and owners who inspected the pieces by hand struggled to separate them from genuine jewelry.
