Mumbai: A 20-year-old woman suffering from severe shortness of breath due to leakage of blood from the heart valve successfully underwent minimally invasive mitral valve replacement surgery at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central. This state-of-the-art technique was able to avoid the large ulcer that remains after conventional open heart surgery, and the patient had excellent aesthetic results with rapid recovery.

The young woman had been suffering from increasing shortness of breath for some time. Over time, the problem grew to such an extent that it began to affect her daily activities. After a detailed examination she was diagnosed with acute mitral valve regurgitation. In this condition, the mitral valve in the heart does not close properly, so blood starts leaking backwards. Considering the young age of the patient and the impact of conventional open heart surgery on her rehabilitation and quality of life, the medical team decided to perform minimally invasive surgery. Consultant Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central. Parin Sangoi said, “Mitral valve regurgitation can have a major impact on a patient’s quality of life, especially in young patients who have years of active life ahead of them. Considering this patient’s age, we chose a treatment option that was not only clinically effective, but also less invasive and more aesthetically pleasing.”

The surgery was performed through a small incision under the right breast in collaboration with the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) team. Therefore, open heart surgery does not require a large incision on the chest bone (breastbone). Dr. Sangoi added, “Minimally invasive mitral valve replacement is a relatively infrequent surgery, but has many advantages in the right patient. Smaller incisions result in less surgical trauma, faster patient recovery, less postoperative discomfort, and superior aesthetic results. Especially for younger patients, these benefits can make a big positive difference in their rehabilitation experience and confidence.”

The surgery was successful and the patient was left with almost no visible ulcer. After the surgery, her shortness of breath improved significantly and she recovered well and returned to normal life in just one week. This case study shows that modern technology in heart surgery has now made it possible to effectively treat complex heart diseases with less invasive methods. This allows the patients to get excellent medical results and also reduce the physical and mental stress of the surgery to a great extent.
