Lionel Scaloni has raised serious uncertainty about his future as Argentina's head coach following their crushing 1-0 loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. The 48-year-old appeared deeply emotional during his post-match press conference as he contemplated whether he could lead the major squad rebuild now required.

Emotional moment in New Jersey

Moments after the narrow defeat at MetLife Stadium, Scaloni struggled to contain his emotions, eventually breaking down in tears and cutting short his interaction with the media.

Despite the heartbreak of failing to defend the title won in 2022, Scaloni took time to reflect on his remarkable reign, during which Argentina have captured four major trophies since 2018.

Speaking through tears, the coach suggested that his long-term future had already been carefully considered. He emphasised his commitment to fulfilling his current contract but admitted uncertainty about what lies ahead. “I have an idea of what I want to do, I will fulfil the contract and then I’ll see. The truth is that I feel the need to think, because I don’t know if something this big can be done again.”

The challenge of renewing the squad

One of the biggest issues weighing on Scaloni’s mind is the inevitable ageing of the core players who have been vital to Argentina’s recent success. Veterans such as Lionel Messi, Nicolas Otamendi, and Rodrigo De Paul have been key to the team’s identity, but with another four years until the next World Cup, a major squad overhaul appears unavoidable.

“For it to continue, a lot of things are needed, especially to reset, to once again form a group like this one, which will be difficult to form again, and it hurts my soul,” Scaloni admitted.

This statement suggests that the emotional and mental strain of starting from scratch may ultimately determine his decision.

Previous doubts and fatigue

This is not the first time Scaloni has publicly questioned his continuity. Back in November 2023, following a historic win over Brazil at the Maracana, he shocked the Argentine camp by saying he needed time to reflect because “the bar is very high” and “it is complicated to keep winning.”

Although he later extended his contract until December 2026, those earlier doubts had stemmed from professional fatigue and difficult negotiations with the Argentine Football Association.

Now, however, his comments seem more conclusive, as he openly described this as the conclusion of a “wonderful” era. Before leaving the stadium, Scaloni appeared slightly more composed, offering a calmer perspective on the months ahead, even as the end seemed near.

Meeting with Tapia ahead

Scaloni is expected to meet with Argentine Football Association (AFA) President Claudio 'Chiqui' Tapia to discuss the team’s transition strategy. The coach insisted he would not step down immediately and plans to honour his contractual commitments until the end of the year.

Reflecting on the final itself, in which Argentina failed to register a single shot on target until extra time, Scaloni remained proud of his players’ effort against a dominant Spanish side. “I already cried my heart out in the locker room. Grateful to this group; they were warriors,” he said.
