The footballing legacy of the Ibrahimovic family is set to continue in the Netherlands as Maximilian Ibrahimovic has completed a permanent transfer from AC Milan to AZ Alkmaar. The young Swedish winger returns to familiar surroundings in the Eredivisie after concluding a developmental loan stint with Ajax’s reserve side.
AZ Alkmaar have confirmed that Maximilian, the eldest son of Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has officially joined the Dutch club on a full-time basis. The 19-year-old’s future had been the subject of significant speculation following his absence from Milan Futuro’s pre-season training. AC Milan opted to leave him out of their preparations to facilitate talks regarding his next move, effectively marking the end of his spell at the San Siro.
This transfer signifies a return to the Netherlands for the promising attacker, who previously represented Jong Ajax, the reserve team of the Amsterdam giants where his father first made his name on the international stage. AZ moved swiftly to finalise the deal, identifying the Swedish youth international as a player with strong developmental potential for their future plans.
Following the transfer, AZ Alkmaar issued an official statement outlining the club’s immediate plans for the youngster. The statement read: “Maximilian Ibrahimovic will have the opportunity to recover from a slight injury and then join Jong AZ. It is not yet known when the 19-year-old attacker will make his return to the field. Once he is back, he will have the opportunity to continue his path of progression, with the conviction that he can, over time, become an asset for the club.”
His switch to AZ comes after a challenging yet educational spell in the Netherlands. On 14 January 2026, Maximilian joined Ajax on a six-month loan, with the Eredivisie club holding a €3.5 million option to make the move permanent. Although he was initially assigned to the reserve team, Jong Ajax, injuries throughout the season hampered his ability to make an impact. He managed only four appearances before moving on to start a new chapter with AZ Alkmaar.
AC Milan also released a statement confirming his permanent exit, officially ending his association with the Rossoneri. The club’s announcement stated: “AC Milan can confirm that Maximilian Zlatan Seger Ibrahimovic has joined Alkmaar Zaanstreek on a permanent basis. The Club wishes Maximilian all the best for the continuation of his career.”
Maximilian’s time with AC Milan began in 2022 when he joined their youth academy. He notably trained with the senior squad in February 2023 during a session attended by his father, who was recovering from injury. The young winger made his professional debut on 12 January 2025 for Milan Futuro in Serie C, assisting their only goal in a 5–1 home defeat to Torres. His brief spell with the Italian club reached its peak on 18 December 2025, when he received his first senior call-up for the Supercoppa Italiana clash against Napoli, where he remained an unused substitute in a 2–0 defeat.
Born in 2006, Maximilian primarily operates as a wide attacker, showcasing a different style from his father’s iconic target-man approach. His time with Jong Ajax provided valuable experience in Dutch football’s technically driven and tactically sharp environment. With this new opportunity at AZ Alkmaar, he aims to carve his own path while building on the family’s remarkable footballing legacy — one that began in the Eredivisie with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s title-winning spell at Ajax, where the elder Ibrahimovic lifted two league titles and the KNVB Cup.
