On Tuesday, the Bankipur assembly by-election took an unexpected turn when the nomination of Veena Manvi, the candidate from Tej Pratap Yadav's Jan Shakti Janata Dal (JJD), was rejected by the returning officer. This decision has introduced a new twist in what is considered one of Bihar's most talked-about by-elections. Veena Manvi had already been in the spotlight during the nomination process, which was marked by significant controversy. Shortly after submitting her nomination papers, she was arrested, adding to the drama of the situation.
According to election regulations, independent or unrecognized political party candidates must submit nomination papers signed by ten proposers. Officials discovered that Veena Manvi's nomination papers contained only nine signatures. Consequently, her nomination was annulled for failing to meet this essential requirement. Upon learning of the rejection of his party's candidate, JJD's national president and former Bihar minister Tej Pratap Yadav visited the Patna collectorate to meet with the returning officer for clarification on the decision.
Later, while speaking to reporters, he alleged that a conspiracy had been orchestrated against his party's candidate and claimed that the nomination was deliberately canceled. Tej Pratap expressed his complete faith in the judiciary and announced that the party would challenge this decision in court. He stated that injustice had been done to Veena Manvi and expressed confidence that the legal process would bring justice to the party.
The Bankipur by-election has already witnessed several surprising events. Initially, the BJP had nominated Abhishek Kumar Sinha, also known as Bunty, as their candidate. However, shortly after filing his nomination papers, he withdrew from the election citing personal reasons. The party then announced Neeraj Kumar Sinha as their new candidate. This contest has garnered attention as Prashant Kishor, the founder of Jan Suraj, is contesting elections for the first time. Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has fielded Rekha Devi.
