O'Reilly is expected to face one of football’s most demanding challenges as England prepare to take on Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals. The Manchester City prospect could be assigned the daunting task of limiting Messi’s influence as both teams compete for a coveted spot in the final.

The Argentina skipper began the tournament with a hat-trick against Algeria, equalling Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 World Cup goals before surpassing it soon after. In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live ahead of the semi-final, O'Reilly expressed his excitement about facing the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. The England youngster called it a rare privilege and recognised Messi’s unmatched stature in world football.

“I can’t wait,” he said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He’s nearing the end of his career. Personally, I think he’s the greatest player ever to step on a football field. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”

Pickford warns against Argentina tunnel vision

While much of the attention remains on Messi, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has urged his teammates to stay alert to the broader threats posed by Lionel Scaloni’s squad. The Everton shot-stopper emphasised that focusing solely on one player could leave the Three Lions exposed to Argentina’s other world-class talents.

“He’s scored so many goals and assisted countless others throughout his career. It’s incredible to finally face him after watching him as a kid,” Pickford remarked.

“We all know how brilliant Messi is, but we’re also aware of Argentina’s overall quality. We can’t just concentrate on Messi. We need to pay attention to their other strengths and look for areas where we can exploit their weaknesses.”

The winner of this semi-final will advance to the World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, July 19.
