Egyptian forward Mostafa Zico has ignited a worldwide debate after claiming that the 2026 World Cup was “rigged” in the aftermath of the Pharaohs’ dramatic round-of-16 elimination against Argentina. In what has already been described as one of the most remarkable post-match interviews in World Cup history, Zico alleged that match officials conspired to ensure Lionel Messi and the reigning champions progressed further in the tournament.
Egypt lose lead in controversial fashion
The Pharaohs came agonisingly close to pulling off one of the most stunning upsets in World Cup history, holding a 2-0 advantage over the title-holders with just 11 minutes left to play. Yasser Ibrahim and Zico had struck to give Egypt a commanding position, while goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir had earlier denied Messi from the penalty spot in the first half.
However, the contest took a dramatic turn in the closing moments. Cristian Romero reduced the deficit before Messi redeemed himself with an 83rd-minute equaliser. In stoppage time, Enzo Fernandez netted the decisive goal with a header, though controversy soon followed as Egyptian players demanded a VAR review for what they believed was a foul by Alexis Mac Allister on Mohamed Salah during the build-up.
Zico’s explosive ‘fixed’ claim on live television
Moments after the final whistle, Zico delivered a blistering criticism on live TV. The forward, who had earlier seen a potential second goal ruled out by VAR, openly questioned the legitimacy of the officiating and accused French referee Francois Letexier of bias.
Speaking to the cameras, Zico said: “The referee was really not fair. Not fair. The referee was not fair. The injustice was clear. We did a good job in the early stages of the match. There’s been an unfairness right from the start of the match. A 2-0 lead isn’t enough to beat Argentina. It’s clear that this tournament has been fixed.”
Hossam Hassan raises concerns about ‘external factors’
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan echoed his player’s frustration, though he remained slightly more measured in his remarks while still hinting at a possible conspiracy. Hassan cited the disallowed goal by Zico and the ignored penalty appeal for Salah as examples of decisions that favoured the defending champions.
“We looked better than the reigning champions — better in everything — but the result was influenced by internal factors on the pitch and external factors off it,” Hassan said to reporters. “Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champion in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running. I want to put it in beautiful words and say, ‘Hard luck,’ but we have been treated unfairly and it has been an injustice.”
Egypt coach vows to boycott the tournament
The outrage within the Egyptian camp has resulted in a complete breakdown of relations with the tournament organisers. Hassan revealed that he confronted referee Letexier immediately after the match, calling his performance “unfair.” The former striker went on to declare that he would have nothing more to do with the 2026 competition.
Concluding his press conference on a defiant note, Hassan stated: “I’m going home and won’t be watching any more games from the tournament. What happened to us wasn’t fair. We should have had a penalty, a goal was disallowed, and I don’t know why it was disallowed.”
