‘You can never predict him’ – former Lionesses goalkeeper Mary Earps has shared her insights on England’s World Cup No.1 Jordan Pickford, highlighting his explosive strength, long-range kicking, and unpredictable temperament. The Everton star has been instrumental in guiding England to the quarter-finals, delivering a commanding performance against Mexico and solidifying his position as Gareth Southgate’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of a crucial meeting with Erling Haaland’s Norway.

Explosive power and tournament consistency

Earps outlined the qualities that make Pickford vital to England’s campaign. The 30-year-old has featured in every match of the World Cup, recording clean sheets against Ghana and Panama after conceding twice in the group stage clash with Croatia. Despite letting in one goal against DR Congo in the round of 32, his form continues to impress. “I thought he was outstanding the other night. Maybe he didn’t start the tournament as strongly as he’d have liked – not quite the Jordan Pickford we’re used to seeing for England – but he was incredible against Mexico, claiming every cross with authority,” Earps told Sky Sports. “I’ve put power at the top of his attributes because he covers the goal so well. He dives for every ball, even those flying wide or high – that’s part of his presence. It makes forwards second-guess their finishing margins. He’s not the tallest keeper, but he’s exceptionally explosive and commands his area brilliantly.”

Direct distribution and control against Mexico

Another key strength, according to Earps, is Pickford’s ability to launch England into attack through direct kicking. “He can absolutely thump that ball long! When it comes to playing direct, he helps England escape pressure. He often looks for Harry Kane to hold up play or to relieve pressure and gain ground. He’s more of a long-ball distributor than an intricate, short-passing type like Ederson. It was clearly part of the game plan – not quite like PSG’s approach of kicking every ball out, but definitely aimed at gaining territory and avoiding early mistakes that could give Mexico chances.” Against Mexico in the round of 16, even though he conceded twice, Pickford’s overall display was widely regarded as his finest of the tournament so far.

Unpredictable character and defensive resolve

Earps also emphasised Pickford’s unique personality as a defining trait. “That’s one of my favourite things about watching him – you never quite know what’s coming. He might hold the ball for an extra 10 seconds or start shouting instructions at his defenders,” she said. “But I love that. I like seeing goalkeepers with personality, and he’s got that in abundance. It really came through the other night. The defenders were excellent too, but he and Dan Burn, especially in the last half-hour, were immense in dealing with crosses and defending their box.”

Next challenge: Norway and Haaland

England now turn their focus to a tough quarter-final battle against Norway, where Pickford will face the formidable challenge of containing Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker, who has already scored seven goals in the tournament, recently fired his team past Brazil with a stunning brace in a 2-1 win in the round of 16. The Three Lions will undergo an intense training schedule this week as they prepare for what promises to be one of their most demanding fixtures yet.
