Polestar has officially confirmed that a new, higher-riding SUV version of its Polestar 4 crossover will make its debut on 2 September. The upcoming model is set to compete directly with the BMW iX3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric.
This new, more upright iteration of the Polestar 4 has been designed to focus more on "flexibility and practicality," according to the company. Polestar also stated that the SUV will feature "versatile storage capabilities for every journey," as revealed alongside a fresh official teaser image.
In its first technical disclosure, Polestar confirmed that the SUV will come with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, with the top variant producing 536bhp, matching the performance output of the existing Polestar 4.
The new SUV is expected to deliver a similar maximum range to its sleeker counterpart, offering a claimed 391 miles on a single charge in its most efficient version. It will also retain the same 400-volt electrical system that supports charging speeds of up to 200kW.
Production of the Polestar 4 SUV will take place in Busan, South Korea, alongside the coupé-roof version. The vehicle will be officially unveiled in the coming weeks, with order books scheduled to open in September.
Autocar previously revealed that this new SUV will feature a traditional, upright rear window, replacing the lower-slung Polestar 4’s camera-based rear-view setup. This design adjustment is one of the key elements that distinguish the SUV version from its coupé-style sibling.
The overall styling approach of the new model will be more conventional compared to the current Polestar 4, which blends design cues from coupé, crossover, and saloon body types and is positioned as a rival to the Porsche Macan Electric. As part of this update, the existing model will be renamed the Polestar 4 Coupé, while the new SUV version will simply take the name Polestar 4.
Measuring approximately 4850mm in length, the new SUV will be slightly shorter than the US-manufactured Polestar 3, which is positioned as a more premium and performance-oriented offering in the brand’s lineup.
With its launch, the Polestar 4 SUV will enter a highly competitive segment featuring several established electric SUVs, including the BMW iX3, Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric, Audi Q6 E-tron, Lexus RZ, and the popular Tesla Model Y.
