For more than twenty years, Spain have been a constant source of heartache for Portugal’s national football team. La Roja defeated Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16 at the 2010 FIFA World Cup on their way to their first-ever world title.
Two years later, Spain once again got the better of their Iberian neighbours, edging them out on penalties in the European Championship semi-final to book a place in the final. That victory paved the way for Spain to complete a rare treble of major trophies, following their triumphs at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup.
Portugal might have hoped to turn the tables after defeating Spain on penalties in the 2025 UEFA Nations League Final — the last time Spain had lost a competitive match before this World Cup.
However, at the 2026 World Cup in Dallas, Spain brought an end to Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup journey, perhaps for good.
“I leave with a clear conscience,” Ronaldo remarked following the defeat.
“I’ve done everything I could. Portugal had never lifted a trophy before me, and now they’ve won three. We won Euro 2016, which I believe is as significant as the World Cup itself.
“We gave our all… we played a strong game, but Spain are among the best. They will reach the final or come very close.”
Spain had cruised past Austria 3-0 in their Round of 32 encounter, while Portugal narrowly edged out Croatia thanks to a late strike from Gonçalo Ramos. Despite his heroics off the bench in that match, Ramos did not feature at all in Texas — one of several puzzling choices from head coach Roberto Martinez.
The first half saw both teams exchange blows. Mikel Oyarzabal came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock but failed to convert his chance. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Diogo Costa once again proved why he was Portugal’s standout performer of the tournament, putting on a brilliant display between the posts.
After a fast-paced opening half, both sides adopted a more cautious approach in the second. Yet just when it seemed the contest was evenly balanced, disaster struck for Portugal. Nuno Mendes — arguably the only left-back capable of consistently containing Lamine Yamal — suffered an injury in the 56th minute and was replaced by Nelson Semedo.
Spain seized the opportunity, regaining control and pressing Portugal deep into their own half. Their substitutes made an immediate impact, and in the 91st minute, Ferran Torres set up fellow substitute Mikel Merino, who scored the decisive goal to send Spain into the quarter-finals.
Just as Brazil’s early exit from the tournament signalled the end of Neymar’s international career, Portugal’s defeat appeared to mark the end of Ronaldo’s era on the world stage.
“It was my last World Cup, yes,” Ronaldo confirmed. “But for the rest, there’s time to think, to be with my family, and not say things in the heat of the moment.”
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez is set to step down, with Ronaldo’s former mentor Jorge Jesus expected to take over. Martinez managed to deliver the UEFA Nations League title, but his tenure will largely be remembered as a disappointment — defined by fine margins such as the Euro 2024 penalty shootout loss to France and the last-minute defeat to Spain in this tournament.
Ronaldo, who reached the semi-finals in his debut World Cup, has since experienced eliminations in the Round of 16 in 2010, the group stage in 2014, and three consecutive Round of 16 exits thereafter. He concludes his World Cup career with just one knockout goal — a penalty against Croatia in the previous round.
Spain will now head to Los Angeles to face either the USA or Belgium in the quarter-finals. Portugal, on the other hand, depart the competition empty-handed, burdened with questions, regrets, and what-ifs.
For Ronaldo, as he returns home, the World Cup remains the one major competition — unlike the UEFA European Championship, Champions League, LaLiga, or Premier League — that he never truly conquered.
