WhatsApp has recently introduced an excellent username feature to further enhance user privacy. With this feature, you can chat with anyone without sharing your personal phone number.

Although this feature will fully roll out to everyone later this year, users already have the opportunity to reserve their preferred username within the app's settings. If you have selected a username and wish to remove or change it, the process is very simple.

How to delete or change your WhatsApp username?
If you want to remove your current username, simply follow these easy steps:

Open WhatsApp: First, open WhatsApp on your phone.

Go to Profile: Tap on the profile icon visible at the bottom right of the screen.

Select Username: You will see your username at the top of the screen; tap on it.

Tap the Edit Icon: Next, click on the edit icon located at the top right corner.

Change or Remove: You will now have the option to delete your username or change it by typing in a new one.

Note: Currently, this feature for setting or changing usernames is not available on WhatsApp Web; it works only on the mobile app.

What are the benefits of this new feature?
Number remains safe: This feature is designed specifically for interacting with new people. You no longer need to share your number with everyone.

Number visible to existing friends: People already saved in your contact list will continue to see your number just as before.

Social media integration: To make things easier, Meta allows you to use the same username for WhatsApp that you use for Instagram or Facebook.

Could this feature be banned in India?
Reports have surfaced on social media indicating that some individuals have reserved usernames using other people's names. For instance, some have created usernames like 'PMNarendraModi', while others have used the name 'WhatsApp' itself. The government believes that if this feature is misused, it could lead to large-scale fraud. Therefore, the full rollout of this feature in India currently appears somewhat unlikely.
