Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Is Ready—So Why Isn’t India Playing Him?

At the age of just 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has achieved what many cricketers only dream of in their entire careers. He has shattered records, sent veteran bowlers to the cleaners, and become one of the most talked-about cricketers in the world. Stadiums have expanded their seating capacity to accommodate the number of fans who want to watch him play, opposing teams are already joking about him hitting sixes on debut, and pundits are calling him the next big thing in Indian cricket.

Despite all of that, Sooryavanshi has been on the sidelines, watching as his teammates have faced the majority of the team’s overs. For all the hype and heroics, it seems that Sooryavanshi has been waiting patiently for his turn to face the opposition’s best bowlers. And now, after spending the majority of the tour of Ireland and England without facing the toss-up balls, fans are questioning when exactly the star prospect will get his shot at international cricket.

India’s hierarchy comes before individual brilliance, such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

The answer, apparently, lies not in Sooryavanshi’s game, but in India’s philosophy.

Under the leadership of head coach Gambhir, it is believed that the best possible way to build a strong unit is to have continuity and give each player an equal opportunity to play their part. The management feels that bypassing some players by picking a precocious 15-year-old can undermine the ethos of the team, and, more importantly, the senior players have earned the right to carry the baton from the previous generation of cricketers.

The current batting lineup has had the support and faith of the management, and they are expected to continue being the custodians of India’s T20 fortunes for years to come. Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan all played pivotal roles in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 victory, and despite their recent loss to Ireland, they still have the management’s backing.
“…he is certainly ready to play for India. There is no doubt about that. However, Sanju Samson is a player who went far in helping us win the World Cup three months ago,” said assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate in response to a question about why Sooryavanshi was not sent in for his debut appearance.

Shreyas Iyer speaks up for T20I team

India’s new T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer, was standing by the same philosophy before the start of the England series.

“See, all the players have performed well. It’s not that only one man has done well. We need to give that opportunity and security so that they, in turn, give their best in the future. The guys who have won the World Cup know how to play T20 cricket and have been the backbone of this format. It’s important that we stand by them,” he said.

The message was clear – that India wants to build a winning team with a long-term view, as opposed to going with the ‘popular vote’ of the fans.

However, not everyone was in agreement with Iyer’s comments. Sunil Gavaskar, one of India’s legendary cricketers, thought that the Ireland tour was the perfect opportunity to blood Sooryavanshi, especially after the dismal show by Indian batters in all three ODIs against the minnows.

“I was saying for a month that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should have played that series (the two ODIs against Ireland). If you want to blood a youngster, these were the conditions. When you don’t give him an opportunity, the pressure keeps building every time he walks out to bat,” said Gavaskar.

Ex-captain Sunil Gavaskar and former coach Ravi Shastri reckon that the best chance to throw the young opener into the mix was the recent wash-out T20I against England.

“Vaibhav should have played that match (the first T20I against England).” He would have made a mockery of England’s pants (made a mockery of England’s tail). It was a very slow and soft pitch. Get him to play as soon as possible,” said Shastri while on Sony Sports.

The comments by Shastri and Gavaskar only add fuel to the fire that India does want to give the young sensation a chance but are not in a hurry to do so.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi vs Indian Cricket Team Philosophy

The argument over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is far from over. However, the Indian cricket team seems to believe that it is best to leave the young sensation alone and let his stellar performances speak for themselves. It would appear that maintaining the team’s culture and rewarding loyalty is more important to the Indian management than promoting from within, even when it comes to the game’s brightest prospect. On the other hand, retired Indian stars believe that the youngster’s extraordinary talent deserves exceptional recognition.

Sooryavanshi’s debut is only a matter of time, but the question is whether he will debut soon enough for the Indian cricket fans.
