Google is officially discontinuing the public API Tenor today, ending direct access to Tenor’s vast GIF library for third-party developers and applications.
This move, announced earlier in 2026, affects thousands of apps and services that rely on Tenor for seamless GIF and sticker integration — from messaging platforms to social apps and keyboards.
Why Is Google Shutting Down the Tenor API?
According to Google’s official FAQ, the decision is part of an effort to “focus resources on enhancing our core products” and the main Tenor experience.
- January 13, 2026: New API key registrations and integrations stopped.
- June 30, 2026: Full shutdown of the public API. Existing integrations will stop working, returning errors on any API calls.
The Tenor website and Google’s own products (like Gboard) will continue to function normally, but external developers lose programmatic access.
Impact on Apps and Users
Many popular services have integrated Tenor’s API for easy GIF searching and sharing. With the shutdown:
- Apps may suddenly lose GIF functionality.
- Developers must act quickly to avoid broken features for users.
- Users might notice fewer or no GIF options in affected keyboards, chat apps, or social platforms.
This change highlights the risks of relying on third-party APIs that can be deprecated with limited notice.
