Arsenal have been cautioned about moving forward with a potential £60 million transfer for Lille’s young sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi, as a football pundit has drawn parallels with a failed signing once made by Manchester United.
Bouaddi is widely regarded as one of Lille’s brightest prospects. At just 18 years old, he has already cemented his place as a regular starter in central midfield. The youngster turned down an opportunity to represent France at the international level, choosing instead to play for Morocco, where he is currently enhancing his reputation during the World Cup.
So far, Bouaddi has started both of Morocco’s group stage fixtures, playing a key role in their 1-1 draw with Brazil and their 1-0 victory over Scotland.
Arsenal face stiff competition from Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid for Bouaddi’s signature, with Lille having set his price tag at £60 million ahead of the World Cup.
Reports earlier this week suggested that Bouaddi could be part of an ambitious triple signing for Arsenal during the upcoming transfer window.
However, former Manchester United right-back Paul Parker has voiced concerns about Bouaddi’s potential development if he were to join Mikel Arteta’s side.
Parker fears that the Moroccan midfielder could end up following a similar path to Sofyan Amrabat, who failed to impress after joining Manchester United, despite Bouaddi’s seemingly greater potential.
Speaking to Betarades, Parker said: “At the moment, Arsenal seem to be interested in everyone because they’ve just won the league, but when you look at the players they are targeting, you think, ‘That doesn’t really make sense because too much would have to change for them to fit into Arsenal’s system.’”
He added: “These players like to express themselves freely, and that’s often not the profile of an Arsenal player.”
“So, when you look at this young lad Bouaddi, you have to worry about how his career might progress if he joins Arsenal.”
“If scouts had been monitoring him earlier, fair enough. He’s been under the radar, playing in France, and hasn’t exactly been outstanding. Fans need to be wary, as we’ve seen players shine at major tournaments like the World Cup, Euros, or African Cup of Nations and appear to be world class.”
“Amrabat was another such example who caught the world’s attention at the Qatar World Cup when Morocco reached the semi-finals. Suddenly everyone was asking, ‘Where has he been all this time?’”
“Manchester United signed him, and while he was decent, he didn’t quite live up to the hype.”
“You don’t want to fall into the trap of World Cup fever, where one or two strong performances inflate expectations. Now, everyone will be watching Bouaddi closely, and he’ll have to prove his consistency — something that young players sometimes struggle with.”
“If he can replicate his display against Brazil, it will show that he’s composed and mature beyond his years. That would make him a very interesting prospect indeed.”
Meanwhile, reports suggest that an £80 million-rated star has been ‘impressed’ by Andrea Berta’s transfer proposal for Arsenal, indicating that the Gunners are exploring multiple high-profile moves this summer.
