Harry Kane admits lack of space hindered his performance as England held by Ghana in goalless World Cup clash

England were left frustrated after being held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana, with captain Harry Kane struggling to make a significant impact on the game.

In their second World Cup 2026 group match, the Three Lions were unable to follow up their opening victory over Croatia, as Ghana’s disciplined defensive setup nullified England’s attacking threat. Kane, who had been expected to add to his goal tally, found himself isolated for much of the match.

Ghana, under the tactical guidance of manager Carlos Queiroz, adopted a compact and organised approach that saw them crowd the midfield and pack their penalty area. As a result, Kane managed just three touches inside the opposition box across the ninety minutes.

The Tottenham-born striker had one golden opportunity late in the game when Nico O’Reilly’s header struck the crossbar and fell kindly to him, but he was unable to convert from close range.

After the match, Kane spoke to the media about the missed chance and his overall performance. Despite the disappointment, the England captain maintained a calm and reflective tone.

He said, “You go through matches like that. I was just waiting for an opportunity like that to come my way. It was one of those games for a striker where you’re waiting for the ball to drop, and it finally did. I just couldn’t quite get over it, but I’d back myself to score that most times. It’s part of the game. I’ve been doing this long enough to know that sometimes they don’t go in, and you’ve got to accept it.”

Given Kane’s prolific form for Bayern Munich this season and his past World Cup heroics, seeing him miss from inside the box was an unusual sight. Nonetheless, Ghana’s tactical execution ensured England’s attack was kept at bay throughout.

Overall, the encounter was one of the less entertaining fixtures of the World Cup 2026 so far, but for Ghana, it unfolded exactly as they had planned.

Kane later explained the main reason behind his difficulties, attributing it to Ghana’s tight marking and compact defensive structure, which left him little room to operate.

“I was almost man-marked by [Thomas] Partey for much of the game. I didn’t really have the space to drop deep and then arrive late in the box, and they defended their area really well,” Kane said. “We had plenty of crosses coming in, but we couldn’t get the first contact. The passes through the middle were hard to play because it was so congested.”

Despite the stalemate, Kane found positives in England’s performance and remained upbeat about the result. “I felt we improved as the game went on, and once we got the wingers isolated one-on-one, we looked more threatening,” he added. “You’re playing in the World Cup against a strong side that stays compact and makes things tough — and that’s exactly what we faced today.”
