Who is Champat Rai: The grand Ram temple built in Ram Janmabhoomi is once again in the news. This time the discussion is not about faith, but about serious allegations of theft and embezzlement of offerings. At the center of this entire matter is Champat Rai, General Secretary of Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Champat Rai, who was once a professor in a college, became a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker and then became the leader of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Today, serious allegations of corruption are being leveled against him and his close ones.

Politics and SIT investigation on donations

This controversy started when Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav made a post on social media platform X. He alleged that there has been major theft in the donations and offerings of Ram temple. Although no concrete evidence was presented with this allegation, the stir in Ayodhya politics intensified. The matter became so serious that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had to order an SIT investigation into the matter.

The biggest thing in this matter is that the old leader who built the Ram Mandir movement from the ground up seems to be very angry with Champat Rai. Former MP from Ayodhya and firebrand leader Vinay Katiyar has directly targeted Champat Rai. Vinay Katiyar took a very aggressive stance and said that this is not a light matter. People like Kalyan Singh sacrificed governments and went to jail for this temple. Katiyar even said that all the people currently sitting in the trust are thieves and they should all be in jail.

Champat Rai’s side and screws on the driver

When this controversy escalated, Champat Rai only said that regular audit of the trust is being done and everything is normal. Since then he has maintained silence on this matter. But the matter worsened when the police took Champat Rai’s personal driver Tinnu Yadav into custody. Tinnu Yadav has been directly accused of manipulation of offerings and the police is continuously interrogating him.

Ramlala’s journey from professor to becoming Patwari

Champat Rai is a resident of Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh. His family was associated with the Sangh from the beginning. Champat Rai was very fast in studies. At a time when people had difficulty completing their studies, he studied chemistry. In the year 1975, he became a professor in a college in Dhampur. But the emergency in the country changed his life. He was teaching in the class when the police came to arrest him. Champat Rai himself went to the police station and surrendered and spent the entire emergency in jail. After being released from jail, he resigned from the job and became a full-time campaigner of the Sangh.

Encyclopedia of Ram temple built in court

In the year 1991, RSS made Champat Rai the regional organization minister of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and sent him to Ayodhya. As soon as he came to Ayodhya, he became the strongest soldier of the Ram Mandir movement. From 1991 to 1996, Champat Rai stayed in Ayodhya and collected every evidence to prove that there was a Ram temple there before the Babri Masjid. He argued this case in the Supreme Court. Due to having such important evidence in the court, he came to be known as ‘Ramlala’s Patwari’ and ‘Encyclopedia of Ram Mandir’. When the Trust was formed after the Supreme Court decision, he was given the most important post of General Secretary.

Champat Rai has been accused before also

This is not the first time that Champat Rai is surrounded in controversies. Earlier in the year 2021 also, he was accused of buying low-cost land in Ayodhya at expensive prices in the name of the trust. At that time Champat Rai had called these allegations a political stunt. But this time the allegation is of direct theft of offerings and donations, and the attackers are opposition leaders as well as his own old associates. Now it has to be seen what truth comes out in the SIT investigation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
