Jeremy Doku sidelined for Belgium’s World Cup fixture against Iran due to recurring respiratory illness

Belgium’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup have suffered a major blow as key winger Jeremy Doku has been ruled out of the upcoming group stage encounter against Iran. The Manchester City forward is battling a recurring respiratory infection, which has forced him to withdraw from training sessions in Los Angeles.

A sudden health setback in Los Angeles

The news came as an unexpected setback for the Red Devils ahead of their scheduled group training in California. Doku’s absence from the training ground raised eyebrows as the team assembled to prepare for their second match of the tournament. It was later confirmed that the winger would not feature against Iran due to the persistent respiratory issue.

According to reports from Sporza, Doku has been struggling with breathing problems for several weeks. He initially travelled with the Belgian squad despite suffering from a bad cold, although he seemed to be recovering after an impressive second-half display in the tournament opener against Egypt. Unfortunately, his condition worsened on Saturday night after a difficult evening in Los Angeles.

Official medical update and recovery plan

After consultations with Belgium’s medical team, the decision was taken to remove Doku from selection to allow him to fully recuperate. The player has now begun a course of antibiotics to tackle the infection. “It’s best for him to rest now and aim for readiness ahead of the final group match against New Zealand,” explained Vincent Mannaert, Belgium’s sporting director.

Mannaert’s remarks confirm that the team will not take any risks with the player’s health in the immediate fixture. The expectation is that the rest period, combined with ongoing treatment, will help the dynamic winger regain full match fitness in time for the decisive Group G tie next week.

Tactical reshuffle for the Red Devils

Doku’s absence leaves a noticeable gap in Belgium’s attacking setup, compelling coach Garcia to reconsider his tactical approach. The Manchester City star’s ability to take on defenders and create opportunities from wide areas will be sorely missed against a disciplined Iranian defence. As a result, changes within the starting eleven appear inevitable.

The most probable adjustment will see Leandro Trossard shift to his preferred position on the left wing. This move opens up a spot on the right flank, with Dodi Lukebakio, Alexis Saelemaekers, and Charles De Ketelaere all in contention to start in Doku’s place for the crucial clash.

Group G standings and qualification outlook

Belgium currently find themselves in a tightly contested Group G, where all four sides – including New Zealand and Egypt – remain level on one point after the first round of fixtures. The upcoming match against Iran in Los Angeles is therefore a key opportunity for the Red Devils to strengthen their position and take a significant step towards qualifying for the round of 16.
