WhatsApp has started testing two new features for Android users: a green online indicator that shows when contacts are actively using the app, and a new backup management tool that gives users more control over their chat backups. Both features are currently being rolled out in beta versions of the app.
New features under testing
Green online indicator
The new online indicator displays a green dot next to contact names when they are actively using WhatsApp. This visual cue provides real-time visibility into which contacts are currently online, similar to the “active now” indicators seen in other messaging platforms. The feature aims to make it easier for users to know when someone is available for instant conversation.
Previously, WhatsApp only showed “online” status when you opened a chat with someone. The green dot makes this information visible across the entire contacts and chat list without needing to open individual conversations.
Backup management tool
The new backup management feature gives Android users direct control over their cloud chat backups. Users can now:
-
View all existing backups stored in their cloud account (Google Drive)
-
Delete old backups to free up cloud storage space
-
Manage backup settings without leaving the WhatsApp app
This feature addresses a common pain point for users who want to clean up old backups but previously had to navigate through Google Drive’s interface manually. The integrated management tool makes backup cleanup more convenient and user-friendly.
Availability and rollout
Both features are currently limited to beta testers on Android and are not yet available to all users. WhatsApp typically tests new features in beta versions for several weeks before rolling them out to the general public through official app updates.
The features may take a few weeks to reach all Android users, and WhatsApp could adjust or refine them based on beta tester feedback before final release. iOS users may see these features in a later rollout, as WhatsApp often prioritizes Android for certain experimental features.
