Leeds United are reportedly weighing up a move for former Germany international Julian Brandt following his release from Borussia Dortmund. The experienced midfielder is available as a free agent and could bring vast top-level experience to Elland Road, though the Whites are expected to face competition from several other clubs for his services.

Leeds eye seasoned free agent to boost squad

According to reports from YEP, Leeds United are exploring the possibility of signing Brandt as they look to strengthen their squad after finishing 14th in the Premier League. The 30-year-old’s contract with Dortmund is set to expire this summer, making him available on a free transfer.

Brandt spent seven years at Borussia Dortmund after joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019 for a fee of €25 million. The attacking midfielder boasts an impressive career record, having represented Germany 48 times and made over 380 appearances in the Bundesliga, regularly competing at the highest levels of European football.

Brandt’s track record underlines his quality

During his time with Dortmund, Brandt made 307 appearances across all competitions, contributing 57 goals and 70 assists. His consistent attacking output and creativity made him a key figure in the club’s midfield. The German playmaker also possesses extensive European experience, with more than 80 appearances in the UEFA Champions League.

Such experience would be an invaluable addition for Leeds as they aim to enhance their squad depth and on-field leadership. However, Leeds are not the only club monitoring Brandt, with several teams reportedly interested, including at least one side capable of offering Champions League football next season.

Versatility enhances Brandt’s appeal

One of Brandt’s main attributes is his versatility. Throughout his career, he has been deployed as an attacking midfielder, a central midfielder, and on either wing, offering tactical flexibility to any manager. This adaptability could be particularly attractive to Leeds, who are seeking reinforcements in both midfield and attacking areas. Brandt would bring creativity, top-flight experience, and a proven record of goal contributions to the team.

Leeds are also believed to be tracking other midfield options, including Northern Ireland international Shea Charles, as they evaluate multiple potential signings ahead of the upcoming season.

Key decisions on recruitment ahead

Leeds United now face a crucial decision on whether to intensify their pursuit of Brandt amid growing interest from other clubs. While signing such an experienced player on a free transfer presents a significant opportunity, Brandt may also be tempted by offers from clubs competing in European competitions. The coming weeks will be pivotal in determining whether the German midfielder emerges as a concrete target or remains one of several names under consideration as Leeds aim to build a balanced squad of experience and emerging talent.
