Manchester United are reportedly open to retaining Luke Shaw beyond the expiry of his existing contract, but only if the seasoned left-back agrees to a pay cut. As per The Sun, Shaw is entering the final year of his current deal at Old Trafford, which does not include an option for an additional season.
The 30-year-old defender is currently earning around £200,000 per week; however, the club are unlikely to match that salary level if new negotiations take place.
This stance reflects a broader shift in Manchester United’s approach to squad management. The club are keen to avoid committing to high wages for older players unless such deals are structured around performance incentives or are financially prudent.
Shaw’s case is somewhat complex. On one side, the Red Devils are already assessing potential long-term replacements at left-back, given that Shaw will turn 32 before the start of the 2027–28 season. That makes it sensible for the club to plan for the future rather than waiting for a visible decline in form.
On the other side, Shaw reminded United of his importance last season when he became only the fifth player in the club’s Premier League history to start all 38 league matches in a single campaign. After years of battling injuries, that level of consistency was a significant achievement.
Manchester United’s official website confirmed in 2023 that Shaw had signed a contract running until 2027, a report also covered by Sky Sports at that time.
If the club decide to extend Shaw’s stay further, they may adopt a model similar to Harry Maguire’s recent renewal — a contract featuring lower guaranteed wages, supplemented by performance-based bonuses and appearance clauses.
Such an arrangement would represent a balanced compromise. Shaw continues to be one of United’s most seasoned defenders and remains capable of delivering quality performances when fit, while the club must also safeguard their financial structure.
Ultimately, this situation appears less about sentimentality and more about Manchester United’s evolving sense of discipline in contract management. Shaw may still have a role to play, but it will only be under conditions aligned with the club’s long-term strategy.
