Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has come out in strong defence of Rodri after the midfielder was subjected to what he described as ‘insulting’ criticism following La Roja’s goalless start to their 2026 World Cup campaign against Cape Verde. The Manchester City star was accused by some observers of slowing down Spain’s tempo, but De la Fuente firmly rejected those claims, insisting that Rodri remains the finest player in the world.
De la Fuente has pushed back against suggestions that Rodri’s style of play is hampering Spain’s attacking rhythm after their 0-0 draw with Cape Verde in the opening fixture of the World Cup 2026. The City midfielder faced scrutiny for allegedly disrupting quick transitions, yet the Spanish coach made it clear that he completely disagrees with that view and continues to regard Rodri as one of his most vital figures on the pitch.
In an interview with El Partidazo de Cope, De la Fuente dismissed the criticism directed at Rodri, questioning the reasoning behind such remarks. He went on to reaffirm his admiration for the midfielder, asserting that even when not performing at his peak, Rodri remains among the top players in world football.
“Good heavens, please. For you to say things like this. Some people can say one thing or another, but in any case, I find it highly insulting to say that about the best player in the world,” De la Fuente stated.
“Rodrigo is the best player in the world, and even at 50% he's much better than most midfielders in the world. Even at 50%. And with us, he's a player of exceptional importance, with fantastic clarity and vision, balance. Rodrigo is a guiding light for us.”
De la Fuente also questioned the way Spanish footballers are treated in comparison to other international stars, suggesting that players from Spain often face harsher criticism. He wondered whether similar remarks would ever be made about players from other countries who are equally celebrated.
He said: “Would they dare say that about other players who are also considered among the best in the world? Would they dare? I don't think so. But since they're Spanish, and you can say things about our players that you don't say about others.”
Spain will now look to move past their opening setback and find more cutting edge in attack as they continue their group stage matches. With pressure mounting, both Rodri and the national team will aim to deliver improved performances when they take on Saudi Arabia on Sunday.
The question now remains: how far can Spain progress in the 2026 World Cup?
